Biography of Sudarshan Patnaik
Sudarshan Patnaik is a true ordinary sand artist who has made India proud with his amazing sand sculptures. Sudarshan Patnaik was the first artist to promote sand art in India and when you see his amazing sand sculpture art, it is hard to believe that he had no formal training and was able to learn it himself.
Born and brought up in the city of Puri, Orissa, he was fascinated by this art form from childhood. When he was seven years old, the artist focused on developing and perfecting his sand art, in the process he created hundreds of sand sculptures. As a result of his complete dedication he became the first Indian sand artist to become world renowned with extensive achievements and awards.
Sudarshan Patnaik grew up in a poor family that could not afford education, but due to his unique talent in shaping sand into canvas and creating beautiful sculptures, fate led him to global fame and fortune.
His sculptures focus on current issues and public awareness, environmental, religious and social issues as well as world issues, celebrities and anything that inspires people to do good. His work has been exhibited in India, UK, China, Japan, Holland, US, France, Italy and many other countries and his work has been appreciated.
Achievements:
Sudarshan Patnaik's list of achievements is impressive and endless. Below are the most notable achievements at the national and international levels.
* In 2014, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, for his work in the field of sand art.
* He was awarded the People's Choice Awards at the 1st Moscow International Sand Sculpture Championship in Russia.
* He created the largest Santa Claus sand creation at 15 feet tall and entered his name in the books of the world.
* One of his most popular sand art works is 'The Black Taj Mahal' sculpture which is appreciated worldwide.
In 2013, E received a gold medal at the 12th International Sand Sculpting Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia, 1st prize.
* In 2011 he won 1st prize as well as public prize in Denmark. In 2012, he also received a double gold medal in the Solo International Sand Art Competition held at Merwala.
* The more than 50 international sand sculpture competitions and festivals he has participated in helping around the world is just the beginning of his achievements.
Sudarshan Patnaik aims to promote and create awareness of this unique art form from the seventh century among the youth and those interested in sand art. Hence, the foundation he established "The Golden Sand Art Institute" is located in his hometown Puri.
